How solar works

Sunlight to savings, in four steps.

Solar panels may sound like a complicated investment, so here is what is actually happening on your roof.

Panels absorb sunlight

Panels sit on your roof and are typically made from silicon, a semiconductor. Photovoltaic cells absorb sunlight and generate electricity.

Cells produce DC energy

That photovoltaic process converts the sunlight into direct current, or DC, electricity.

The inverter converts it

A solar inverter turns the DC electricity into alternating current, the AC power that runs almost every appliance in your house.

Your home runs on it

Electricity flows through your home powering everything in it. Any excess your panels generate flows back into the electric grid.
